Lap, designed by M.Mamprin & C.Tettamanti & S.Martelli, is an eco-friendly lamp that stands out for its unique technology called the "magnesium stack." This chemical reaction generates enough electricity to power a 3-watt LED for up to 8 hours, making it an ideal lighting solution for both indoor and outdoor use.
One of the key strengths of Lap is its ability to create clean energy. The lamp's lower container contains three bars of magnesium and three small slabs of carbon. To operate, it requires 1000 ml of water and 50 g of salt. This combination produces a luminous flux of 390 lumens, providing ample lighting for various activities.
Measuring 100 mm in diameter and 435 mm in height, Lap is designed to be portable and easy to use. Its upper part can rotate around two pins, allowing users to adjust the direction of the light according to their needs. Whether you require direct light for focused tasks or ambient light for a cozy atmosphere, Lap can cater to your preferences.
The inspiration for Lap came from the minimal house "Diogene" designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano. The aim was to create a light that shared the same characteristics as the house: sustainable, self-sufficient, and transportable. The designers wanted to offer a lighting solution that would have zero impact on the environment while providing freedom of movement.
Lap was developed as part of the "Luce, Uomo, Spazio nel progetto contemporaneo" course at Politecnico di Milano, under the guidance of Professor Carlotta de Bevilacqua. The project was completed during the first year of the Laurea Magistrale in Design del prodotto per l'innovazione. The lamp's innovative design and commitment to sustainability have earned it recognition in the design community.
Lap received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2014. This award is bestowed upon outstanding designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. Lap's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology showcases the designers' technical and creative skills.
With Lap, M.Mamprin & C.Tettamanti & S.Martelli have created a truly innovative and sustainable lighting solution. By harnessing the power of renewable energy sources, Lap offers a portable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional lamps, making it an ideal choice for those who prioritize both style and sustainability.
